With LANGUAGE! Live California, a good implementation equals good results. Students exceed typical gains and close the gap faster than with any other literacy product. For example, with a 45-minute implementation, it is common for teachers to facilitate classrooms in which students have completed 6 to 7 units in Word Training and Text Training. Research show that a well-balanced program leads to great results.*
Teacher Antavia Hamilton-Ochs led the charge to implement LANGUAGE! Live at Bartlett, one of the most diverse high schools in the country. With more than 90 spoken languages at the school and a broad range of learning challenges, she knew it could fill the gap for the students who need an intervention program to get on grade level for reading. Bartlett students have increased their Lexile scores by 300-400 points using LANGUAGE! Live’s blended solution.
“Everybody is working in a much smaller student-to-teacher ratio, and people are getting a lot more individual instruction.”
—Antavia Hamilton-Ochs, Teacher, Bartlett High School, Anchorage, AK
Karen Loy, principal of Northwest Middle School, shares that 60 percent of her incoming sixth graders are unable to read above the third grade level. Northwest has a diverse ELL population with many different languages spoken. One ELL student, Martin, was once disruptive but has excelled with LANGUAGE! Live and now is on grade level for reading.
“When my kids come in for sixth grade, I have 60 percent of them who can’t read above the third-grade level, but by the time they get to eighth grade, that number has reduced and it’s because we implement LANGUAGE! Live with fidelity.”
—Karen Loy, Principal, Northwest Middle School, Knox County Schools, Knoxville, TN
“It’s building that confidence for them, where at 16, they kind of felt like a failure, ‘I can’t do it; I can’t go to high school. Now they have the success that they can do it; they know they can do it now.” Jennifer McMillan, Master Reading Teacher, Burke Middle High School, Charleston, SC
“These students are engaged learners now and even the weakest students from the outset are now largely reaching grade level. We’ve used a variety of products over the years, but LANGUAGE! Live is one that has allowed us to achieve the most significant gains with our then-lowest-achieving students. We’ve had a lot of growth, and even their desire to be learners has changed and grown. In fact, these students even understand other subjects better because they can read the course materials effectively.” —Dr. Amy Runge, Administrator, An Achievable Dream Academy, Newport New Public Schools, VA
“We’ve seen an increase in our students’ skills based on the benchmark data that we’ve reviewed as a team at the district. We’ve also seen the joy in our teachers by having use of direct, explicit instruction right in their hands.” —Jancita Byant, Director, Exceptional Children’s Services
Charleston County Public Schools, SC
“We are seeing years’ worth of Lexile gaps being closed in a semester’s worth of time.”
—Mario Acosta, Principal, PFC Robert P. Hernandez Middle School, Round Rock Independent School District, TX
