New Mexico Deepens Commitment to Reading and Writing Intervention With New 2025 Mini Grant

The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) is expanding its efforts to close literacy gaps with the launch of the 2025 CLSD Upper Elementary and Secondary Interventions Mini Grant. This initiative is part of the state’s broader literacy vision to ensure every student—not just in early grades, but through high school—receives the targeted reading and writing intervention they need to thrive. Applications for the upper-elementary and secondary grant are open through June 27, 2025.
Approved solutions in the upper-elementary and secondary category:
Step Up to Writing® is a comprehensive program of multisensory writing strategies that develop K–12 students’ ability to create thoughtful, well-written compositions. The solution’s explicit and systematic approach to teaching writing is designed to provide clear strategies, methods, and supports for increased writing success in all content areas. Created for all students, the strategies can be integrated into any curriculum or implemented as a standalone writing solution.
REWARDS® is a series of short-term reading and writing intervention solutions specifically designed for struggling learners in grades 4–12. Developed by award-winning education authors and literacy experts, like Dr. Anita Archer, the REWARDS suite is a powerful, research-validated, and specialized program for adolescent students who struggle reading long, multisyllabic words and comprehending content-area text. With explicit, teacher-led instruction, this intervention gives students new skills to become successful readers.
A Cohesive Vision for Literacy K–12
With the 2025 mini grant, New Mexico leaders reinforce their vision of a cohesive, K–12 literacy system—one that delivers strong, evidence-based instruction to all students and ensures intervention is never an afterthought. By combining high-quality instructional materials, data-driven strategies, and professional learning, state officials are empowering district leaders and educators to create literacy success stories at every grade level.
Whether a student is beginning to decode or learning to write persuasively, New Mexico’s literacy efforts show what’s possible when reading and writing intervention are intentional, well-supported, and embedded into a statewide vision for equity and excellence.
