Improving Math Instruction: Making the Complex Understandable for Teachers and Students

Well-designed mathematics instruction is of greater importance than ever before. Avoiding confusion and making every lesson compelling and easy to grasp is key.

The relationship between math curriculum and professional development has ebbed and flowed. At the extremes, curricula has taken center stage, and associated professional development has played a minor role. However, with the rise of standards and the emphasis on communication and problem solving, this relationship has flipped. Teacher content knowledge and how to teach that content has become the emphasis.

In this webinar, Dr. John Woodward will present a contemporary vision of the relationship between math curriculum and professional development based on recent case studies. Dr. Woodward also will illustrate the better student outcomes possible when teacher professional development is at the heart of math instruction.

Attendees will leave with new knowledge and skills to:

  • Identify “user-friendly curriculum” for teachers and students
  • More readily address the needs of struggling students
  • Balance the relationship between math curriculum and professional development
