Teaching Reading: The Connection Between Student Literacy and Professional Development

Learning to read can be challenging and many teachers of reading do not always know how to help students master foundational skills that lead to lifelong literacy. When teachers are more fully prepared, they can help all learners overcome challenges and improve reading achievement.

This informative webinar, with literacy experts Dr. Mary Dahlgren and Michelle Elia, explores how teachers need to be smarter than their programs; details effective solutions and interventions; and demonstrates how to supplement and strengthen core programs and adapt pacing for individuals.

You will gain knowledge and insights into how:

  • Rigid implementation of a core program can create as many problems as haphazard, incomplete implementation
  • Teacher judgment—informed by knowledge of research and use of formative data—should always be a factor in decision making
  • To define quality professional development and identify the indicators of strong core instruction
  • To monitor and outline goals that are meaningful, ambitious, and attainable
