DALLAS, Jan. 10, 2019 – Hawkins (Texas) Elementary School and Andover (Mass.) High School are the grand prize winners of the “#IAmMore” contest, Voyager Sopris Learning and WeAreTeachers jointly announced today. Earlier this school year, the #IAmMore movement was introduced, designed to embolden educators and students to effect change, believe in the power of literacy, and allow them to claim their strengths and potential.
Both Andover High School, with 1,738 students, and Hawkins Elementary School, with 325 students, each win a $1,000 cash prize, to be used at their schools. The contest had a total of 1,030 entries. Teacher Daniel Brennan submitted on behalf of Andover; Principal Stephanie McConnell submitted on behalf of Hawkins.
The contest’s premise was to give educators and students a voice, allowing them to illustrate what makes them “more,” and to share their untapped potential. Educators were asked to print posters and distribute them to their students to fill out, answering the sentence, “I am more than…” Participants were then asked to take a photo or video with their poster and upload it to Instagram or Twitter or the contest landing page.

Hawkins Elementary School’s winning video can be viewed here — https://vimeo.com/user20525249/review/300553043/fbb0637879
“As the Principal, I was excited for my campus to enter the contest and thrilled to know our video was selected,” Hawkins Elementary’s McConnell said. “The students and teachers were so involved in the project. I love all of the positive messages on the wall and in the video. The entire school enjoyed watching the first viewing of the video. When students hear and share empowering messages, it makes our school a stronger family.”
In addition to the two grand prizes, 25 runners-up were named. Each of the schools will receive a bundle of classroom goodies, including an Instax camera and film, art supplies, and more.
“We had great expectations coming into the contest, and we are thrilled to say they were wildly exceeded,” said Ileana Q. Rowe, senior vice president of marketing for Voyager Sopris Learning. “Educators and students seized upon the important elements of ‘I Am More’ and provided thought-provoking and poignant responses. And it’s important to know this contest is just the beginning of the #IAmMore movement as it will continue to move forward.”
