SYRACUSE, N.Y., Oct. 25, 2018 — Dr. Louisa Moats, a nationally recognized literacy expert, will be honored next week by The Reading League with the Benita A. Blachman Award for Advancing Evidence into Practice. The award will be presented to Dr. Moats, the first-ever recipient of the honor, by Dr. Blachman on Tuesday (Oct. 30) at The Reading League’s second annual conference at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown.
Dr. Moats, who also will deliver the conference’s keynote address on Tuesday, is the lead author of Voyager Sopris Learning’s LETRS professional development solution. LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) is a landmark professional development course of study that prepares educators for the challenging work of teaching literacy.
“I am very honored to receive this award,” Dr. Moats said. “Dr. Blachman’s research and writing on subjects dear to me—including how to measure and describe early spelling development, and how to teach phoneme awareness and basic reading skill—inspired and informed my own work (and that of many others) for decades. I am also honored to have been recognized by The Reading League, a young organization of like-minded professionals who are leading the march toward more enlightened reading instruction.”
Dr. Blachman, who for 35 years was a professor in the School of Education at Syracuse University, has dedicated her distinguished career to studying the science of reading, including the educational and neurophysical impact of evidence-based interventions. Her research focused on factors that predict reading achievement and on early intervention to prevent reading failure.
“Many founding members of The Reading League had the privilege to study under Dr. Blachman and work alongside her,” said Dr. Maria Murray, Chief Executive Officer, The Reading League. “Where we were once striving to make a difference in our respective work environments, reuniting to advance the knowledge and passion we gained from her tutelage was the inspiration for The Reading League. Moreover, it is with unanimous support that Dr. Moats has been selected to be the first recipient of the Benita A. Blachman Award.”
Dr. Moats is widely acclaimed as a teacher, psychologist, researcher, graduate school faculty member, and author of many influential scientific journal articles, books, and policy papers on reading, spelling language, and teacher preparation. She developed LETRS based on her experiences as an instructor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, St. Michael’s College in Vermont, the Dartmouth Medical School Department of Psychiatry, and the University of Texas, Houston.
Dr. Moats earned her doctoral degree in reading and human development from Harvard University Graduate School of Education, her master’s degree in learning disabilities/special education from Peabody College of Vanderbilt, and her bachelor’s degree at Wellesley College.
Backed by more than 30 years of evidence-based, scientific research and more than a decade of proven success, Voyager Sopris Learning’s LETRS is relied upon by thousands of educators, as it helps teachers understand and apply the science of effective reading instruction.
