6 Simple Strategies for Improving Argument Writing

The transition from Opinion to Argument Writing in middle school can be challenging for teachers and students. Developing an opinion into a clearly stated and supported claim requires a shift in thinking, planning, and writing.

We have dissected each of the Argument Writing standards and crafted a strategy for every nuance. We are happy to share 6 tips from these strategies for use with students in grades 6–8 at any skill level.

Each of these tips and tools is part of the new edition of Step Up to Writing®, a systematic program that breaks writing skills into smaller steps. Each step can be taught and practiced separately and then executed together to reach the ultimate objective of composing a well-organized, engaging piece of writing for a specific purpose.

Every strategy includes differentiation and can be implemented flexibly across
content areas.
